What is Majority of None?

In April 1999, the San Jose Mercury News published a five-day series called "A Majority of None." The series examined how Santa Clara County was on the verge of becoming a place where no single race was in the a majority. Over the course of the series, reporters talked to folks about what it would mean to live in this new plurality.

Because of this diversity, race and demographics has long been one of the core stories covered by the San Jose Mercury News. On June 28, we're inviting the community to join us for our first CopyCamp to discuss the coverage of race and demographics. The agenda will be created by folks who attend on the day of event.

You can register for CopyCamp by visiting our wiki. We created this site to allow folks to meet other attendees in advance. Please take a moment to register here, create a profile, introduce yourself to other attendees, and even propose a topic you'd like to have discussed at CopyCamp.

Little Saigon fallout left mark, San Jose candidates say

The Mercury News' Joshua Molina has a story today looking at how the controversy over the "Little Saigon" issue may hurt some of the Vietnamese candidates in the recent local elections:

The buzz in political circles after Madison Nguyen was elected to the San Jose City Council in 2005 was that it was the beginning of a new era of Vietnamese political clout. She was the first, it was said, but surely not the last. But…

'Godfather' of Silicon Valley's Asian-American political community steps into spotlight

Ken McLaughlin puts together a great profile today on Paul Fong. Here's an exerpt:

When an Asian-American candidate asks local Democratic power broker Larry Stone for his support, he has one question: "Where are you with Paul Fong?" If Stone discovers the candidate hasn't talked to Fong, he advises the candidate to have a little chat with him and report back.

"Paul Fong is the godfather," said Stone, Santa…

Mary Johnson's face will confound anyone who tries to fit her into a tidy racial box. It is not quite black, not quite white; not quite American Indian, not quite Hispanic.

It is all of those things. And if current demographic trends hold, it could be the…

Silicon Valley sees itself as a meritocracy built on brains, a smoothly working model of diversity in action.

Much of that image is true. But while ethnic diversity is widely celebrated as an engine of the valley's success, it is virtually absent from…
